Tel Aviv Street Party – Celebrating Simcha Torah 2008

A large crowd singing, clapping and celebrating in the street below, broke the silence in our usually quiet tel aviv city centre neighbourhood.  As the procession was heading out onto Ben Gurion Boulevard towards Ben Yehuda Street we didnt get much of a look, but the happy festive atmosphere had certainly intrigued us.

Grabbing a jacket and my camera we hit the streets to join the party. Walking onto Ben Gurion we were astounded. There in the middle of the intersection was the Alnon Street Synagogue celebrating Simcha Torah 2008 in traditional style and the residents of Tel Aviv were loving it.

The music was pumping and the crowd, growing larger by the second was a sea of smiles, dancing singing and celebrating.  Young couples, families, soldiers, pensioners, tourists, people walking their dogs, folks on bikes, carers pushing oldies in wheelchairs,  you know…  a true tel aviv melting pot, all sharing in the celebrations.

From Ben Gurion Boulevard down to Rabin Square the party atmosphere continued and the crowd now enormous, delighted in dancing and singng in the middle of dizengoff and Ben Gurion Streets. The police were fabulous and patiently controlled the traffic while celebrations blocked the streets.  Oh Tel Aviv, you have a coat of so many different colours.. you are amazing !!!

The city where secular and religion exist in harmony
